Most people who use LLMs to do their writing are so lazy that they don't even ask it to remove the screaming signal of AI writing: those damned em-dashes.

It's astounding because prompting "don't use em-dashes" is probably the highest effort-to-reward thing they could be doing.

What a phenomenal #book.

If you’re interested in the “hard problem” of consciousness, this is one book to read and re-read. I came across the author via a scientific article where he (along with Karl Friston) apply the free energy principle to consciousness.

Of course, the full explanation of how and why experience exists is still to be fully known, but the ideas in this book as broadly correct (imo).

The book argues that the “seat” of consciousness is not cortex but brainstem, and that feelings are primary (while perception is in service of satisfying the feelings). The author argues that feelings evolved to help an organism prioritise its needs and respond flexibly in unpredicted environments.

My own thinking is converging on similar lines, although I feel a lot of insight can be extracted by deeply understanding why most processes in our body are unconscious so we can appreciate differentiating characteristics of those processes that we do end up being conscious of.

Overall, I think this book is the most sophisticated account of consciousness that I’ve read till date. Hence I strongly recommend it.
