One of my last projects at Genomics England was working with the fabulous Julia Vitarello on this Rare Therapies Launchpad, an infrastructure pilot to help usher into the UK a new era of individualised medicines for patients with rare disease. We'll focus at first on fatal paediatric brain disorders and antisense oligonucleotides, but this should expand over time to cover other conditions and other individualised modalities like Gene Editing and Prime Editing, which are clearly so promising! What we've learned is that this is far more than a science project... it's a whole pathway. Whole Genome and Transcriptome Sequencing is required to find eligible patients and for individualised drug design, willing clinical specialists need to be lined up to treat the patients, and proportionate regulation and a path to reimbursement is required to encourage investment in this space. It's an early start but the UK is really well positioned in this hugely important new field, and it's been great to get recognition in the Autumn Statement and to be involved. Thanks to Natasha Loder for doing a good job covering this.

Generative foundation models: This is essential viewing in my opinion. Thoughtfully scripted by the team who described human's 'first contact' with AI in social media with their documentary The Social Dilemma. Here Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin do a beautiful job describing our 'second contact with AI' with models like GPT. They describe the opportunities and the clear and present dangers of these technologies, not in the distant future but right now! The Emergence we are seeing from these huge parameter models is astonishing at many levels... and so important for us to consider the second and third order implications, beyond digital art and chatbots. Great to watch with colleagues at work, or with teenage kids at home.
