Healthcare profit pools are quietly shifting. Though overall cost growth continues unchecked, hospitals have been steadily ceding margin to other sectors over the last several years. Rate pressures, shifting care patterns, therapeutic progress and upstarts unbundling care all threaten to perpetuate this dynamic. At #ViVE2024, Dr Rowland Illing, Sanjula Jain, Mary Beth Navarra-Sirio, Ted Syverson, and I discussed how hospitals need to reposition themselves to better compete. Below is a summary of insights from the conversations. Let me know what you think!

  1. Innovate Around the Patient: Hospitals are juggling the interest of multiple stakeholders as they contemplate prioritizing growth strategies. But patient experience and engagement needs to be at the center of any strategy. We need to rebuild the trust that has eroded over the years. Technology purchasing decisions are being rationalized on their ability to facilitate transparency and strengthen the patient relationship.

  2. Double Down on the Core: Over the last few decades, the most successful health systems have grown profitability by doubling down on what they have always been good at, not reinventing themselves. Examples cited include turning cost centers in profit centers (ie, HCA Healthcare & HealthTrust Performance Group, Tenet Healthcare & Conifer Health Solutions), laser focus on consolidated vendor management, and shrinking inpatient footprint in favor of ambulatory footprint.

  3. Crawl with Data and Walk to Technology: Technology does have a role to play in diversified growth, but it must be underpinned by a deliberate data strategy to avoid being a distraction. As Dr Rowland Illing said “data is the new water, an infinite resource that will grow in volume and utility”. Everyone wants generative AI applications, but what they don’t realize they first need is data that is unified, actionable and secure. When you align this data strategy with people (skills, change management), leadership buy-in and process redesign, you can unlock productivity and ROI.

  4. Build an Innovative Culture: Workforce development strategies will make or break hospital profitability 10 years from now. Salient strategies should include career development or upskilling pathways, productivity augmentation, and the development of leaders who are empowered to create a culture of calculated risk-taking.
