Highlights
A few months ago I was incredibly lucky to get asked by Roblox and the Digital Wellness Lab what I thought we could do to foster civility in online spaces. What followed was some of the most inspiring working sessions I have had the chance to join with online safety leaders from academia, civil society and industry. The white paper is finally out and I couldn't be more excited to share it. Some of the recommendations include the need to approach online civility from a youth-rights framework, to activate civility-focused norms when onboarding users to platforms and to involve youth in the design of apps, platforms, policies, and resources. PS. Kudos to Laura Higgins, Tami Bhaumik and the Digital Wellness Lab for ideating and coordinating this inspiring work.
Over the last few months Lucía Gamboa and I have been reflecting on the challenges that GenAI poses to the Trust & Safety world but also on the opportunities it presents us with. Machine learning transformed the way we once combated abuse. Just this week OpenAI shared insights about the impact Chat GPT-4 can have on content moderation. I am excited for our industry to explore the promise of GenAI to improve the health of digital platforms while we collaborate with regulators, civil society and platforms to tackle harmful uses of the technology.
