I was deeply involved in the fields of disaster and conflict early warning systems for many years. These systems faced deep systemic problems. They assumed that accurate forecasts would ensure rapid response. But prevention is political, not technical. Warnings rarely triggered responses, regardless of their accuracy. This prompted some of us to focus more on people-centered response efforts, self-organization, resilience building and contingency planning.

I see some parallels with climate mitigation and adaptation.

Bren Smith, co-lead/founder of GreenWave is one of the world's leading Ocean Farming advocates and innovators. He pioneered the development of regenerative Ocean Farming. His take on the role of emerging tech in Ocean Farming explains why I'm excited to work with SamudraOceans. From Bren's award-winning book "Eat Like a Fish" 👇

🌊 We’re going to need some robots; the central challenge is that our soils turn a thousand times a day; we can’t see what we grow; we need embedded sensors in our farms and have to deploy autonomous tech to keep an eye on our crops; we need tech to track underwater weather; we need real-time data uploaded to dashboards so we can know when to plant and where in the water column nutrients are densest year to year; and how to keep pollutants from showing up in our crops; we need tech to alert us to early biofouling to optimize harvest times. These cutting-edge tools for predictive farming will increase yields and monitor climate change. This tech will harvest more than crops— farmers will sell data; data-harvesting presents a new income stream for local ocean farmers.
