10 Lessons Why Being a Pilot Makes Me a Better Founder

As a founder, leading a multi-dimensional life is vital. Diverse interests sharpen our minds, broaden worldviews, and prevent burnout. Over the past three years, I've pursued two parallel journeys: as a private pilot and a founder. Strikingly, they share unique skills that complement each other well. Here are the top 10 ways being a pilot improved my abilities as a founder and vice versa:

🕵🏼Research:  Pilots and founders both require thorough research before their journeys. Knowing customer segments, competition, weather, and obstacles is vital to avoid 'flying blind.'

📋**Process **:  Detailed processes, like pre-flight checklists, ensure consistency and quality. In startups, clear processes for project management and sales strategy are essential, especially in regulated industries like healthcare.

📈 Focus on the Important KPIs: In a world of data overload, it's crucial to focus on the most meaningful metrics, those that truly drive growth and reflect the health of the business/the flight.

🔄Setbacks:  Navigating setbacks is vital in aviation and startups. Developing resilience and seeing setbacks as learning opportunities, not failures, leads to long-term success.

🤝Teamwork: Not being an expert in everything and relying on your team's expertise leads to better decisions, shared ownership, and a more fun journey.. Big shoutout to my founder co-pilots Susanne Mitschke + Rogelio Arellano

💬Communication:  Clear communication with air traffic control or your startup team ensures alignment, maintains morale, and propels the team towards common goals.

⚖️ Risk Assessment:  Flying and running a startup involve risks. Developing risk assessment, management, and mitigation skills leads to safer flights and more successful company building.

🦎 Adaptability: Changing weather patterns or market conditions require the ability to pivot quickly. Being flexible and adaptable is a valuable trait for both pilots and founders.

🎓Lifelong Learning:  Continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends and advancements are essential, whether in aviation technologies or changes in FTC guidelines.

🎉Celebrate:  Celebrating successes fuels motivation and boosts morale, whether it's the thrill of lift-off after pre-flight checks or signing a big client.

Navigating a company or a plane is never smooth, but my pilot skills influenced my approach as a founder, guiding me through turbulence toward clearer skies. Highly recommend everyone to find a hobby that can compliment your professional life. #founderjourney #aviation #startup
