Meta AI's Llama release today is really important, likely the most important open source AI announcement ever. Many people don't understand why:

  1. The quality gap between the best proprietary and open models has effectively vanished. No one really knew if this gap would get bigger or smaller over time, but the answer is here now. More importantly, Meta is already working on Llama 4... they are not messing around. There's an outside chance that open models actually surpass the quality of closed models in the future. That's something no one would have thought possible 12 months ago.

  2. The Llama license now allows you to use generated outputs to train your own customized models. Llama 405b is the first frontier-quality model that allows you to do this. Almost every AI product can benefit from this... distilling models into smaller footprints is a huge win for driving costs down and quality up for production AI applications.

  3. Llama really doubled down on stuff enterprises need in these newer models. The new models are best in class on tool use as well as have a 128k context window which is really critical for applications that use complex chaining, which is extremely prevalent.

The big winner in all this is companies and consumers deploying AI. The Llama models will accelerate existing trend towards lower costs and broad availability of AI reasoning for the next generation of products.

Databricks is super excited to be partnering with Meta to bring this to our customers. https://lnkd.in/gquHxCnE

Today Databricks is announcing a set of tools that empower enterprises to build production quality AI applications.

Over the last year we've worked with thousands of companies who are deploying Generative AI apps to transform their business. The number one challenge we see is moving from "cool demo" phase to "production application" phase. In production, GenAI applications need to produce high quality, accurate, and safe answers. We are excited to launch a unified suite of tools to improve quality and robustness of each phase of the AI application lifecycle:

  1. Evaluating and tuning base LLM models for quality, cost, and safety (open source, proprietary, and fully custom).
  2. Integrating your enterprise data with AI models, to eliminate hallucinations and ensure real-time accurate answers.
  3. Monitoring and enforce guardrails on content actually delivered to users in production.

These capabilities have been in private preview over the last 6 months and we've been thrilled to see customers drastically improve the quality of applications, allowing them to roll GenAI out widely to internal and external customers. Today, we're opening things up more broadly. We look forward to seeing the next generation of AI applications built on Databricks!
