Coinbase has to pay $100M over its failure “to build and maintain a functional compliance program” to guard against money laundering by its users.
When Coinbase went public, many commentators were talking about the energy consumption of crypto, so at Util we looked at what our holistic data showed were the real-world positive and negative impacts of cryptocurrency exchanges and the cryptocurrencies on them.
In Util’s newsletter we wrote at the time that “emissions aren’t Coinbase’s only, or even biggest, problem.” Their most negative impact is on ‘Peace, Justice and Strong institutions’ because of the ease of use for illicit finance: money laundering, organized crime, fraud, tax evasion, bribery, terrorism. Our comment at the time: “The list of indicators reads like an asset management compliance team’s worst nightmare.”
That was in April of 2021, twenty months ago.
And it was more than just seeing a possible downside: our data measurably showed that these were the greater negative impacts on the world. I am so proud of the team at Util that built, and continues to build better ways for investors to inform their decisions.
