Ever been to a museum and gotten so engrossed in an exhibit you forget you're learning? This past weekend, I visited The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY. One exhibit, a 1967 arcade game called "Computer Quiz" by Nutting Associates, perfectly demonstrated the power of gamification. This early game used lights, sounds, and competition to make learning fun and engaging. It turns out, science backs this up. A quote on the museum wall from Diane Ackerman perfectly captured the essence: "Play is our brain's favorite way of learning."
There's a reason games have been around for millennia. They tap into our natural desire for challenge, reward, and social interaction. But what if we harnessed that power to drive innovation?
Studies show gamification can significantly boost innovation. A study by Sursa et al., 2018 (https://lnkd.in/g7UKYcNh) found that gamified idea generation platforms increased the quantity and quality of ideas submitted by employees. Another study by Kapp, K. M. (2012) (https://lnkd.in/g--enydu) reported that gamified training programs resulted in a 50% increase in knowledge retention.
Here's how gamification can unlock innovation in your workplace:
- Boost Creativity: Games encourage us to experiment, think outside the box, and take risks - all essential for innovation.
- Increase Engagement: Badges, leaderboards, and points can make problem-solving fun and motivate participation.
- Break Down Silos: Team-based games can foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across departments.
Think beyond the ping pong table. Gamification is a powerful tool to supercharge your innovation engine.
