Paul Cummins
President and CEO at Coalition for Engaged Education
Paul Cummins is an accomplished educator and visionary leader in the field of progressive education. He is the President and CEO of the Coalition for Engaged Education, a position he has held since 1995.1 Cummins received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Southern California.14
In 1971, Cummins co-founded Crossroads School in Santa Monica, California, which became a nationally recognized model for innovative, independent schools.34 After stepping down as Headmaster of Crossroads in 1995, he formed the New Visions Foundation, now known as the Coalition for Engaged Education, to offer opportunities for engaged education to all youth.4
Throughout his career, Cummins has been dedicated to creating educational opportunities for diverse and underserved students. He founded New Roads School, a K-12 independent school in Santa Monica with a strong commitment to social justice and financial aid for students from various socioeconomic backgrounds.4
Cummins is also an author, having published several books on education, including "Proceed With Passion: Engaging Students in Meaningful Education" and "Two Americas, Two Educations: Funding Quality Schools for all Students".4 His work focuses on empowering youth impacted by the justice and foster care systems through compassionate social support, education, and advocacy for systemic change.2
Under Cummins' leadership, the Coalition for Engaged Education has developed several programs to support at-risk youth, including C/HOPE for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth, and C/FORWARD for foster youth.5 These programs have shown success in reducing recidivism rates and supporting youth in their educational and career pursuits.5
