When we talk about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the corporate world, it's easy to forget that the foundations of these concepts are deeply personal. Today, I want to share a touching article about my wife, Lisa Harvey-Duren, and our late stepdaughter, Kayla.
Despite facing immense challenges from congenital myotonic dystrophy, Kayla's spirit and zest for life were unstoppable. Her joy, resilience, and insatiable thirst for adventure inspire a new project close to our hearts: an inclusive playground at Jade Street Park in Capitola.
As businesses push for DEI, we must remember that the essence of inclusion starts early in life. Playgrounds like these ensure that every child, regardless of their physical abilities, has a chance to enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood.
While Kayla's time with us was short, her legacy lives on in this playground and in the countless lives it will touch. This project is a testament to the importance of creating spaces that are welcoming to everyone, just as we strive to create workplaces that embrace all.
