I’m pleased to congratulate Deborah O'Toole who will become our bank’s new Chair on 7 November 2024.

A seasoned Non-Executive Director, Deb is a familiar face at our bank – she currently serves on our Board and brings a deep understanding of immense opportunities and challenges in front of us. She believes in the mission of customer-owned banking and, as a Director with many years’ experience across numerous Boards, has the skills and knowledge to help guide our bank through the next stages of its growth.

We will also farewell current Chair, Nigel Ampherlaw, whose unwavering support and guidance has been pivotal to Great Southern Bank. To name just a few highlights during his time as Chairman, we adopted a new, modern and simple constitution, expanded our customer offering and support, and we attracted new generations to customer-owned banking with our rebrand and renewed purpose. Nigel has had an immense, positive impact on both our bank, and the customer-owned banking sector.

Supporting First Nations through embedding education and participation.   NAIDOC Week is a crucial time for us to reflect on our reconciliation journey as a bank, to examine our progress and to see where we need to make greater efforts.   A cornerstone of our efforts - and a theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week - is our belief in the importance of learning about First Nations people as a way to advance reconciliation.   It’s a belief that underpins many of the goals and strategies outlined in our latest Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which challenges our bank to tackle the structural barriers to financial inclusion faced by First Nations peoples. This plan builds on our first RAP, which focused on embedding reconciliation more deeply into our activities.   Recognising the significance of a RAP, this year we partnered with Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) to create an industry-first – a RAP designed to support reconciliation and education efforts across the mutual and customer-owned sector.   At Great Southern Bank, we are also increasing our support for First Nations-owned businesses. Through a partnership with the Carlton Football Club, we’re supporting their Loorende-Gat program, which aims to create and nurture a thriving community of First Nations people and businesses. We’ve also made a multi-year financial commitment to engage further with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses in our supply chain.   More work needs to be done. Reconciliation is a long journey. But I believe the things we learn on the way will deepen reconciliation with First Nations peoples, and reward those who take part.   #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #FirstNations #IndigenousEntrepreneurs #FirstNationsBusiness
