I took a sabbatical and it’s the best thing I ever did.
I turn 50 next month and, like many of us around my age, this year I’ve been feeling a bit battered and bruised from 25+ years of work. I hadn’t taken a holiday in 5 years and I needed to reset. So, instead of taking a two week beach holiday (which would have been the ‘normal’ thing to do), in August I did something completely out of character for me. With the kind agreement of my family and colleagues, I packed a rucksack, jumped on a boat and headed to Spain on my own. I took a sabbatical. Over 30 days, in sweltering temperatures, I walked a total of 562 miles westwards across the north of Spain. I walked the Camino de Santiago. It was the biggest physical and mental challenge I’ve ever undertaken but I purposefully didn’t publicise what I was doing. I didn’t blog about it, do a video diary, announce it on social media or do it for charity. I removed all requirements to ‘perform’. I did the walk alone and I did it solely for me. No phone calls, no emails, no social updates, no meetings. Nobody to please. For the first time in my career I checked out entirely, from everything. Just me, a backpack and the challenge of what is known as ‘The Way’. For 30 days, my life was distilled down to the most simple and basic level. Walk, eat, sleep, repeat. Beyond that, all the other anxieties of work and modern life just evaporated. This post isn’t an account of my walk. I could write ad nauseum on the highs, the lows and the weird and wonderful people I met (Merlin, disillusioned city worker, walking around the world pushing all his possessions in a pram). However, that’s not for this forum. This post is a reflection on the impact of just being alone, switching off entirely from work for an extended period and truly challenging yourself.
Now that I’ve been back a while, I’ve started to feel the benefits of the journey. It’s refreshed me beyond anything a simple holiday would have achieved. I’m physically and mentally stronger. My mojo is back. I’m match fit. In short, it’s the best investment I could have made in my career, my business and my health as I turn 50. If, like most of us, you work too much, think too much and are almost constantly switched on, then I hope this post sows a seed for you. Buen camino!
