KEEP CALM and CARRY ON - PROCRASTINATING.

Yesterday at 2:44 AM on August 26, 2024, a fire broke out in a residential building in Dagenham, London. The eerie similarities to the Grenfell Tower tragedy are undeniable, and it's more than just disheartening—it's infuriating. Seven years have passed since Grenfell, and what have we learned? Don't change rapidly to minimize risks when it’s easier to procrastinate...

Grenfell claimed 72 lives because of catastrophic failures in decision-making—flammable cladding, poor fire safety management, and contractors indifferent to responsibility and due diligence. Now, here we are again. If it wasn't for a resident knocking furiously on every door, we could have seen another tragic loss of life. This time, sheer luck saved people, not the system designed to protect them. It was a six-floor building, not 22 floors, this is the only reason people didn’t die this time. Would the residents have been told to stay put again?

But here's the real issue: no deaths mean more procrastination. Why do we always wait for people to die before taking action?

The London Fire Brigade and the insurance sector are the ones we need to hold accountable now. This isn't a slight against the bravery of the firefighters—they did their jobs under horrific circumstances. Why does the system allows people to live in buildings with multiple serious fire issues? That’s the failure.

Why are insurance companies still insuring these flawed buildings? You can't get car insurance if you're blind, so why are insurers blind to these glaring safety risks?

LFB's Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne confirmed, "The building has a number of fire safety issues known to London Fire Brigade." Yet, they and the insurers allowed the building to remain open. It’s clear,: we’ve learned nothing.

Seven years, two months, and two weeks since Grenfell, and still, 50% of the 4,600 buildings identified as having unsafe cladding have not been fully rectified. Why? Because of procrastination.

But risks are only increasing. With the surge of lithium-powered scooters, bikes, and other devices in our homes, fire incidents in the UK are on the rise.

We have all the technology and insights to prevent and manage these disasters, so why are fire authorities and insurers not taking this seriously enough?

It's 2024, not 1924, so how did the smoke alarms fail again? Why are we still delaying the removal of flammable cladding? The entire sector needs to change and take responsibility. The fire authorities and insurers have to demand change, or impose evacuations of buildings too dangerous to inhabit.

Dame Judith Hackitt, chairman of the Independent Review of Building Regulations, who has been working on The Golden Thread to ensure accountability in building safety, made it clear: we cannot wait for the outcomes of investigations and inquiries. She recommended immediate changes, so this fire, which could have easily resulted in many deaths, cannot happen again.
