It's a real privilege to have a full 1-hour interview with my dad about his life available via the BBC (I was in tears in my kitchen).

I don't expect any of my connections to be as interested in it but it did make me think that you might want to sit down and talk to your parents (if you are lucky to have them still with you). I learned things that I didn't know.

My main takeaways were that -

💫 Confidence is a superpower. Dad has always believed in himself. He believed he could be a great player and manager, which played a big part in becoming those things.

👊 Respect is earned. He always taught me that no one is better than you and you're not better than anyone else. Status means nothing to him, it's what you do that matters.

👴 It's remarkable that Dad and his great-grandson Alfred are here together. There's such a marked contrast in how he describes growing up in a working-class area of post-war Stoke (11 of them in a small 3-bedroom house) and how Alfred will grow up in 21st-century Copenhagen. How things have changed in the span of generations.

❤️ He absolutely loves Football, Stoke-on-Trent and Stoke City. In his 76 years, he's never waivered from that.

I'm very lucky to have the parents that I have and I'm unashamedly proud of them.

I never really considered that I needed a 'creative outlet' - something that I had created with my name against it, separate from my work. But producing 100 Innovations per Hour in 2021 made me realise that it was something I enjoyed. Producing work and putting it out there.

And so, here we are again with The Long Play, a monthly podcast with my co-host Tom Figgins where we take a whole month to listen to a classic album. It's like a book club but for music.

We've just released episode 2 where we talk about our experience of listening to Erykah Badu's Baduizm (link in the comments) which was our album in May.

June is now here and Stevie Wonder awaits!
