Congratulations and Respect to Marvell Technology, who just announced the world's first 800 Gigabit per second (Gbps) coherent DSP. (By comparison, household broadband internet connections are typically 1 Gbps or less.) This chip addresses the ever-increasing demand for datacenter bandwidth, acting as a modem for inter-datacenter fiber connections from 80km to 2000km or more. Designed in 5nm CMOS, the chip's technical specs are mindboggling: 130+ Gigabaud, 16-QAM modulation with constellation shaping, high-gain LDPC code, etc. I can't begin to describe how hard this is to build.
This is the fifth generation of technology pioneered by ClariPhy Communications, which is now a unit of Marvell. When Norman Swenson, Bharath Jagannathan and I co-founded ClariPhy in the early 2000's with the vision of applying the power of DSP to fiber optic communications, we started with a 10 Gbps DSP, which was state of the art at the time. Marvell's chip is 80x faster, but the concept is the same: using powerful digital modulation, equalization and coding techniques increases speed and transmission distance, and decreases cost, of bandwidth in fiber optic networks. I'm very proud to see this technology thriving at Marvell and offer a huge congrats to my former colleagues there.

Congratulations to John M. Cioffi of Stanford University for receiving the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in a White House ceremony this week! This medal is the nation's highest honor awarded for technological advancement. It's a big deal. John is a giant in the field of communications and digital signal processing (DSP) and pioneered the technology that made broadband internet possible. He is also a highly successful entrepreneur, having founded and built two companies in the broadband space.
On a personal note, John was my PhD advisor at Stanford where he taught me the beauty of communications and information theory and helped ignite my passion for entrepreneurship. He was also an early investor and board member at the company I co-founded (ClariPhy Communications) with another of his students, Norman Swenson. John's students have founded dozens of companies and John has always been their biggest cheerleader. We are all immensely grateful and proud of John's achievements. Way to go John!
