Are you interested in Korean research? We’re excited to share some fascinating insights from Nature's latest thematic magazine, where South Korea has now taken the lead in researchers per capita—an outstanding testament to their crucial role in global innovation.

League of Scholars had the privilege of contributing to this edition, providing data and analysis on talent mobility between academia and industry. Our findings, featured in the "Sector Swap" figure, show many leading countries experienced low domestic cross-sector mobility between 2021 and 2024. South Korea has historically exhibited higher cross-sector movement, however, factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and weakening ties between universities and companies are likely influencing these trends.

The magazine is rich with data and stories that highlight South Korea's remarkable research achievements, despite the country’s characteristic modesty. As Sung-Young Kim from Macquarie University aptly puts it, “Koreans themselves would tell you that they’re not very good at R&D — even though, from an international perspective, the country is obviously a stellar performer.”
