Paul Zeleza
Vice Chancellor at United States International University - Africa
Paul Tiyambe Zeleza is a distinguished Malawian scholar, administrator, and author with an extensive career in academia spanning multiple continents. Born on May 25, 1955, he served as the Vice Chancellor and Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the United States International University-Africa in Nairobi, Kenya from 2016 to 2021.12
Currently, Zeleza holds the position of Senior Advisor for Strategic Initiatives and Professor of African Studies at Howard University, a role he assumed in October 2023.45 His academic journey includes earning a B.A. from the University of Malawi, an M.A. from the University of London, and a Ph.D. in economic history from Dalhousie University in Canada.2
Throughout his career, Zeleza has held numerous prestigious positions, including:
- Associate Provost and North Star Distinguished Professor at Case Western Reserve University (2021-2023)2
- Vice President for Academic Affairs at Quinnipiac University (2013-2015)1
- Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University (2009-2013)1

Zeleza is a prolific author, having published over 400 journal articles, book chapters, and essays, as well as authored or edited 28 books and five short monographs.2 His interdisciplinary work covers African economic history, development studies, intellectual history, diaspora studies, gender studies, human rights studies, cultural studies, and literary studies.2
In addition to his academic work, Zeleza has been involved in various international initiatives, including serving as President of the U.S. African Studies Association in 2008-20093 and working as a consultant for the Ford and MacArthur foundations on projects to revitalize higher education in Africa.3
