After 17 Virtual Production shoots and 4 years of working in this fast-developing part of the industry, it was a real honour to be asked by Zoe Mutter to give my perspective to British Cinematographer on how VP has developed and how the workflows are different from regular shoots.

I'll be expanding on these thoughts soon so let me know if you want to receive a copy of the little guide I'm putting together, in the meantime please give Phil Rhodes' article a read and let me know your thoughts!

Post about toys that George Rumsey let us play with for Pokemon TVC from Panavision!

The were many challenges that faced Director Lee Cheney and DOP Andreas Neo in prepping the Pokemon TVC - they had a lot to handle.

Having to maintain strict social distancing to the players ruled out any sort of dolly combo, as fantastic as Pete Olney (Key Grip) is, he doesn't have 5m long arms! We would have to head that challenge off with a different tool.

Another challenge was being able to go low low low. Our 40cm furry friends needed hero shots, so there were a number of ways George and Matt Collis suggested we could achieve this. One of the options suggested was the Panavision PCP, available in large format option too which relays your lens 90 degrees from your camera. It's a super fast system to changeover to from regular mode while also giving you flexibility to use standard clamp on matteboxes for all your filter needs.

Another big factor in the planning for this job was the shoot had to be quick and nimble - we only 2 hours with our England players and 6 hours with the rest of our cast. Our shoot plan had to be meticulous.

With all of these restrictions and others, it made sense to have a B CAM live on the 40' technocrane, manned by Pete Olney and his lovely team. A CAM however, that was gonna be whipped around on Action 99 Cars' Agito, with a brand new rigging solution and MOTION24 LIMITED Movi Pro to go with it!

During our previs shoot day we had a chance to visualise some of the shots, confirm which of our lovely Panavision Primo 70s was going to be precisely what we were looking for and finese shots to be achieved and laid out. Lining up the shot list with stuffed dolls did make for some good BTS pics!

The next time we would all see each other it, it would be on the way into our individual 48 hour hotel room quarantine in the St George's Park Hilton.

Tune in next time for the post about Agito being put through it's paces on our wonder shoot and how it all came together
