After nearly a year of development and sending the first tax report, Norman emerges from stealth to automate accounting and tax filing in Europe. It's hard to be in stealth if you are listed on the government website 😀
Norman is the result of frustration with how financial reporting works. As an entrepreneur, I had no choice but to work with accounting firms and pay thousands of dollars/euros/Singaporean dollars. It's like a bee sting for VC-funded startups, but it's a monthly income for most freelancers.
The worst part wasn't the invoices. It was the hours I had to put into preparing the books, collecting documents, and answering a ton of questions. Often, I had to become an expert in the topic just to file taxes on time.
Accountants don't exactly have the time of their lives either. The last time I checked, no accountant had made it to the Forbes billionaire list. They rely on severely outdated tools and waste 90% of their time on low-margin bookkeeping. Quoting our German tax advisor, "It takes 6 months of training to use our software."
Today, we are launching (1) effortless tax filing for freelancers, (2) smart invoicing, and (3) self-employment registration in Germany, our first market. Norman is an Accounting Autopilot. It frees Saturdays blocked out for spreadsheets, slashing data entry and amplifying tax savings. Finally, European entrepreneurs have more time to enjoy those 6-hour notary visits.
The most unexpected part of Norman's journey was the overwhelming support I received. Many founders found time to answer my naive questions when all we had was just ambition. Huge thank you to Lino Teuteberg, Diana Zur Löwen, Niclas Storz, Jeff Seibert, Kos Stiskin, Yulia Yaroslavtseva, Slava Akulov, Victor Lysenko, Ivan Maryasin, Sergiej Soft (Rewiakin)… for your support and encouragement along the way.
Even though I have to dig into things like Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung, I've never enjoyed work as much as I have in the past year. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with incredible people like Stanislau Kharlap and Michael (Misha) Sokolov. It's Stan who made Norman a reality. With Lev R. and the engineering team, they built a next-gen accounting platform in a quarter of the time and probably 1/10th of the resources. Michael is the visionary who first believed in Norman's vision. He accelerated our market entry and continually inspired us to push the boundaries of what we thought possible (adding a ton of jokes to the lore along the way).
Less accounting. More tax savings. Faster.
