Phil Barker

UBC associate vice-president (innovation and entrepreneurship) and vice-principal research (Okanagan)

Phil Barker is a neuroscientist and the Vice-Principal Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC), known for his expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship.

With a background in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University, a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Alberta, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurobiology from Stanford University School of Medicine, Phil Barker has a strong educational foundation in science and research.

Throughout his career, Phil has held various key positions in academia, including being a Professor, Chair of McGill University Innovation Steering Committee, and Scientific Director at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University.

His professional journey includes founding Aegera Therapeutics Inc. and serving in roles such as Director of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience, Associate Director for Strategic Affairs, and Interim Director at McGill University.

Prior to his current position at UBC, Phil Barker was the Associate Vice-President for Innovation and Entrepreneurship as well as the Vice-Principal Research for the Okanagan campus at UBC.

Apart from his academic and research achievements, Phil Barker describes himself as a father, husband, and a maker of 'decent ribs', showcasing his diverse interests and talents beyond his professional life.
