There is a recent viral debate around a topic that has stayed under the broader radar for too long. It all started last month with that McKinsey article, and they introduced this framework for measuring developer productivity.
Until today, I felt no reason to post any counterarguments because several highly regarded and well-respected experts in our field jumped quickly to respond and have been posting counterarguments and alternative viewpoints on this topic (Kent Beck and Gergely Orosz most notably, Dave Farley, Abi Noda, and others). Many of these authors also point to articles published in the past that contradict McKinsey's point of view. This conversation is still raging on.
The timing intrigues me and backs up where I've stood on this issue for many years. As the ongoing battle of posts on this topic continues, I am grateful to Planview Inc. for the opportunity to speak and present today on day one of the 2023 Planview Accelerate Global Customer Conference.
While some of the metrics are similar, It's incredible how my discussion on embracing Value Stream Management, Flow Metrics, and the risks and promising potential in today's metrics landed in the counterpoints to the article. Most notably, I completed and submitted the talk about a week before the release of the McKinsey article last month.
I'm excited about the ongoing conversations. The path ahead isn't about strict ideas of right or wrong; it's all about our choices. The feedback we get from the consequences and impact of these choices is invaluable. And let's face it, some options take more work to bounce back from.
