I was chatting with a customer recently about their quoting and order processing workflow. They were manually entering data across multiple systems - from spreadsheets to ERP to inventory management.

This approach takes a lot of time and can lead to mistakes. Here's how I suggested they think about it:

  1. Find key connection points: Look for ways to link systems, like quoting software with ERP.

  2. Focus on high-volume tasks: Start by automating frequent jobs first, such as creating sales orders or importing BOMs.

  3. Use APIs: Many modern systems have APIs that allow for smooth data transfer between platforms.

  4. Think about all-in-one platforms: Check out solutions that combine multiple functions to cut down on separate systems.

  5. Start small and build up: Begin with one or two connections and grow from there.

By cutting down on manual data entry, companies can really boost their efficiency, accuracy, and ultimately, their profits. It's not just about saving time - it's about freeing up your team to focus on more important activities that push your business forward.

What's been your experience with automating data flows between systems? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Feeling thankful after the Microsoft / CrowdStrike outage and travel challenges. After visiting a few customers and attending a hardware dinner Cofactr sponsored with Hardware FYI I was heading to SFO to catch a redeye home to NYC. At the airport, I was met with 4 delays and eventually a cancellation from Delta Air Lines at about midnight, when no other options were available. I used Google Maps to find hotels and make frantic calls on my Samsung Electronics smartphone with T-Mobile service until I found a Marriott Hotels property that had vacancies back in SF proper. I called an Uber to take me to the hotel while I tethered internet to my Apple computer so I could buy an American Airlines ticket through Alaska Airlines website after finding the listing on Expedia Group (expedia.com). A complex multi-nodal ecosystem, working in a wildly complex and unspoken chorus, helped to provide me with solutions in a difficult moment. I often find myself in awe that 99.9% of the time, I can say to someone 2,600 miles away that I'll see them tomorrow at 9 am and have that be true. What we all do, in combination, makes a world of miracles. Many of us are in critical industries in one way or another, and issues can cause huge ripples. There are setbacks, challenges, bugs, and bad pushes of software... but greater than 99.9% of the time, the world operates exactly as you'd want it to: A reality where you can fly through the air, have infinite data at your fingertips, be endlessly entertained, get any food you want delivered to you, and automate almost everything in your life. Yesterday was rough for many people, but I know CrowdStrike has kept servers operating, available, and healthy through their work, helping to stop, I'm sure, innumerable attacks on infrastructure. Delta Air Lines is an incredible airline that has safely and punctually taken me around the world several times. And don't get me started on Microsoft... they're holding up half the world. I can't believe how convenient everything is—how unbelievable almost everything I do is. A little setback and a quick resolution give me pause to take in the spectacular tapestry of technology we occupy.
