Phillip Richmond

PhD Candidate at BC Children's Hospital, University of British Columbia

Phillip Richmond is a dedicated bioinformatics PhD candidate based at the BC Children's Hospital, working under Dr. Wasserman's guidance, focusing on processing, analyzing, and optimizing whole genome sequencing and whole exome sequencing data. His work is centered on assisting children affected by rare genetic disorders, aiming to revolutionize diagnostic processes and bring relief to affected families. Phillip's research targets identifying structural variants causing genetic disorders and pinpointing genome regulatory element disruptions. Prior to his current role, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder and engaged in extensive genomic research projects under Professor Robin Dowell, showcasing the potential of next-generation sequencing across various disciplines. His previous ventures include investigating genomic elements linked to alcohol tolerance, studying the impact of polyploidy on stress adaptation in yeast, and deciphering adaptive pathways through transcription-genotype connections. Moreover, Phillip's research efforts have delved into understanding the mechanisms of experimental cancer drugs and identifying key transcriptional regulators in yeast strains, besides utilizing next-generation sequencing in quality control processes for brewing.
