Being in the Netherlands it is striking how absurd some UK norms suddenly seem. Here for example is a humble four storey housing estate a short walk from Rotterdam main station packed with features the UK cops would say would "cause crime" and must be removed. And yet it's fine🤷🏼

Communal garden open to public ✅ Loads of benches and places to sit ✅ Low fences to rear gardens ✅ Ground floor accessible from both sides ✅ Play area with no fence ✅ Multiple cycling and pedestrian routes ✅

The selling off of Norwich’s brand new, award-winning council homes by Mikhail Riches should be a wake-up call. Trying to solve the UK housing crisis while right to buy remains on the statute books is like trying to fill a bath with the plug out. The policy has not just asset-stripped Britain’s local authorities, pushing them to the brink of destitution, it also makes it impossible to ever rebuild public housing stocks for the long term. It must be abolished. — I wrote the definitive case against right to buy for the Guardian.
