Team orders are a popular topic at the moment after the Monza GP. But did you know that Ferrari’s actions at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix actually led to team orders being banned in F1 for 8 years?
Rubens Barrichello, who had been leading for most of the race over his teammate Michael Schumacher, was instructed to let Schumacher win to improve his standing in the World Drivers Championship.
This led to a very awkward and loudly booed podium ceremony. Schumacher even handed Barrichello the winner’s trophy and moved him to the top step on the podium.
This breach in “podium protocol” resulted in the FIA fining Ferrari $500k and immediately banning team orders.
However, teams didn’t stop - they just started using coded messages…
When Felipe Massa was told by Ferrari during the 2010 German GP that “Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message”…EVERYONE could confirm they understood.
Massa soon let his teammate past and Alonso went on to win the race. Ferrari’s actions, once again, caused uproar and this time were fined $100k .
That following December, the FIA lifted the ban, acknowledging that the rules were too difficult to enforce and full of loopholes.
Since then, we’ve seen a whole host of controversial team order moments. Think Vettel vs Webber “Multi-21” in 2013, Hamilton vs Rosberg in 2014, or even more recently Norris vs Piastri at the Hungarian GP.
So, should team orders be allowed? And should the drivers have to follow them? 🤔
