Highlights
Today Hospitable.com received its first Direct chargeback 😱 … and nothing makes me happier?
Here is the kicker:
The host knows NOTHING about it. Not even aware what a chargeback is maybe 😇
For them, it is still a non-refundable reservation that was cancelled by the guest.
And they will get paid NO MATTER WHAT.
The guest was disgruntled and escalated to their bank, who refunded them back. (Did I mention the non-refundable part? Maybe something the guest forgot to mention to their bank!)
Now their bank goes after us to assert the payment was done using a counterfeited card.
Ok, let’s see:
- We have a 3D Secure verification identifying the guest to their bank.
- Through our guest vetting, we have a secure ID verification.
- We have a selfie of the guest, that matches the ID
- We have the logged session of that user booking from their IP.
- That comes on top of all technical pieces identifying the guest, that the bank can cross-reference.
For this to be a counterfeited card, this would have to be a next level fraud.
While we are preparing our defence to the chargeback, our host does not have to even know about it. They will receive +$1,000 as expected from a non-refundable reservation.
It is OUR JOB, as the merchant or record, to protect our hosts time against defending against those claims, and to ensure they get paid according to their terms.
Getting listed Direct is always a “greener grass” situation, but then who is there to help on payment expertise, defence against fraud and chargebacks, securing guest details, and insurance in case of damage to their properties?
Oh, talking about this: we already experienced our first damage case on a Direct booking last week. Would you like to hear about it? Type Premium in the comments 🤣
