Caught up with old acquaintances while in the Bay Area. The last time I ran into Ralph Furman was on the beaches of Colombia, when he was the national coach of the Canadian IMO team, and I was the deputy coach of USA. Now he’s built quite a company (Parafin) which has originated billions of dollars of loans to small businesses. We met up at Tyson Mao’s restaurant Wursthall 🌭

Omg! The volunteer running the A/V for my talk in Cupertino turned out to be none other than Larry Wall, the CREATOR OF PERL!!! I wrote so many Perl scripts. I loved $_ as a concept. The USA national math Olympiad training program schedule was generated with the help of a Perl script under the decade of my management. And it turned out that Larry is a wonderful, kind soul. It’s amazing to meet people who made such an impact in the history of software. It turns out he was there because the talk was in the meeting room of New Life Church (borrowed by the school which hosted my talk), which Larry is with. https://lnkd.in/edDc8vcu
