🚀 OpenObserve is trending on GitHub once again, now ranked as the #3 project! 🚀
💡 What is OpenObserve?
If you're new to OpenObserve, it's an open-source observability tool that packs a punch. With logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts, and more, all in a single binary, you can get started in under 2 minutes on your laptop with less than 150 MB RAM or spin up a cluster to analyze petabytes of data.
Why is OpenObserve gaining traction?
🔥 Blazing fast and cost-effective: Many Elasticsearch users have replaced their clusters with OpenObserve, achieving a 5:1 ratio, where 5 Elasticsearch nodes can be replaced by a single OpenObserve node.
🔥 Replacing popular tools: Users have replaced Grafana, Loki, Jaeger, Datadog, and Splunk with OpenObserve, reducing costs by 10x and improving performance.
🔥 Simple and scalable: With over 6 million downloads and growing rapidly, OpenObserve is becoming the go-to observability platform.
🔥 Accessible to all: Students use OpenObserve on their laptops to learn observability, while multiple Fortune 100 companies rely on large clusters of OpenObserve to search and analyze petabytes of data.
Join the momentum! Check out OpenObserve on GitHub and discover why it's the observability platform of choice for many.
Open source licensing can sometimes be tricky.
Apache and MIT are go to licenses when you want to release an open source project. However they may not be right if you are trying to build a business around it. Case in point - Elastic, Hashicorp, MongoDB, Grafana and more.
Why do large organizations like Google and Meta release open source projects? Also why do they release their projects with a permissive license?
It basically serves their business. Take pytorch and kubernetes as examples. Meta wanted to protect their investment in pytorch and Google wanted to compete with Amazon in Cloud race.
If you are a developer what license should you use? Why?
If you are not looking for monetization then Apache and MIT and best licenses, however if you are looking to monetize your project AGPL and source available licenses may be a better option, based on your preferences, philosophies and situation.
I have tried to cover these and more in detail in the accompanying blog. check comments for the blog link.
