Praful Mathur is the CEO of Sarama, a company he founded in January 2022. Sarama focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance communication between pets and their owners, specifically aiming to translate dogs' barks into understandable messages for pet parents.12
Before leading Sarama, Mathur had a diverse career in technology and entrepreneurship. Highlights
Most of you know that over the last year, I have been working on Sarama and we’ve done quite a bit:
- Built a new model for Kennel Cough (Bordetella) detection
- Built a new model to detect emotions from barks & video
- Built a new model to identify dogs from their barks & video
- Built hardware to run our models more effectively closer to the dogs’ barks
I have been spending a ton of time with my dogs, learning their habits and listening to what their barks and body languages mean. What’s been most fascinating about this whole journey is learning more about the deep cognitive abilities of dogs.
For example, dogs’ processing of smells is pretty advanced but it’s highly under-explored for healthcare in humans & animals. Dogs can:
- detect 80+ diseases in people including early onset detection of Parkinsons’ much earlier than even our own diagnostics
- according to Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, they can tell time based on smell
- they can detect bombs, guns, drugs, missing people, and many other missions for national security
There are estimates that if we had a dog National Guard we could have stopped Covid within weeks given their incredible ability to pick up on Covid patients sometimes before they show symptoms.
Despite billions being spent by DoD, MIT, many other research labs and now a deep-science startup, Osmo, humans have been unable to replicate this sense effectively. Though this is a sense that we lack and underappreciated but has implications to solve some of the toughest problems people face.
None of this is particularly new in terms of scientific understanding but what’s new is their cognitive abilities to develop language. That’s what I’ll explore more in the next post so if this intrigues you follow me for more!
