🥉 Preethi Pal was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a kid ~ just imagine the journey from there to the finishing lines of the Women's 200m T35 race at the Paris 2024 Paralympics Games!! 🥉
A couple of days ago, she won a 🥉 in the women's 100m T35 run (14.21 seconds) and now she has backed it with yet another 🥉 in the 200m run (30.01 seconds)
In both races, she delivered her Personal Best and isn't that what the Paralympics and life is all about?!
Till a week ago, no Indian had ever won a medal in a para-athletics events and now suddenly we have not one but two, both thanks to and owned by this 23 year old from Meerut.
She had missed medal opportunities twice at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games but had a strong come back this year when she won a bronze at the World Para Athletics Championships at Kobe, Japan in May and earlier in the year had won two gold medals in the Indian Open Para Athletics Championships at Bangalore.
She has come to the party big time in Paris and takes India's 🇮🇳 medal tally to 6, thus equalizing the total medal haul of the Indian Olympic contingent, within just the first 4 days of the Paralympics 💪🏻
Singapore's 🇸🇬 Yip Pin Xiu achieves a historic three-peater in the 100m backstroke S2 to kick off the nation's Paralympics campaign at the Paris 2024 Games:
🥇 Rio 2016
🥇 Tokyo 2020
🥇 Paris 2024
What a fascinating story of defending one's territory and dominating one's lane 💪🏻
She is Singapore's most decorated athlete with 6 Paralympics medals:
🇨🇳 Beijing 2008 🥇 50m backstroke S3 🥈 50m freestyle S3
🇬🇧 London 2012 missed the podium
🇧🇷 Rio 2016 🥇 100m backstroke S2 (WR: 2:07:09) 🥇 50m backstroke S2
🇯🇵 Tokyo 2020 🥇 100m backstroke S2 🥇 50m backstroke S2
🇫🇷 Paris 2024 🥇 100m backstroke S2
She also holds the World Record in the 50m lane, which she set at the US Paralympic swimming trials when she completed the race in 1 minute and 00.80 seconds.
She starts as favourites to defend her medal in that category and win back another 🥇 to take her personal Paralympics tally to a historic 7 medals?!
Beyond this, her cabinet has 6 medals from the World Championships and 3 from the Asian Para Games.
The 32 year old ace swimmer isn't just a champion of her lanes but also in society ~ not only did she win Singapore's first gold in Paralympics in Beijing 2008, but her success also fueled a public outcry to increase the prize money for a Para-gold medalist to S$500,000 from the earlier amount of S$100,000.
With her record breaking wins at Paris, I hope the public institutions now raise this to a $1 million, to bring it at par with what a "normal" Olympic gold medalist is entitled to win in Singapore!
It is less about the amount but about signalling and inspiring parity and inclusivity, something that both Pin Xiu and her coach Mark Chay, have been advocating for, during their tenures as Nominated Members of Parliament.
Yip Pin Xiu has single-handedly led Singapore's medal hauls at the Paralympics in this century by winning 6 off the 11 medals the nation has won thus far but she would be counting on 9 of her compatriots in Paris, especially from her fellow swimmers in Wei Soong and Sophie!
Can Singapore's medal count touch/cross that elusive total of 5 and can it enter into the Top 40 nations in the medal tally this time? 😊
