Highlights
I recently had the opportunity to attend the conference on ‘Food Security: Sustainable & Resilient Agri & Food Systems’ in Delhi, hosted by AMCHAM India. As the chair of the Food Processing Committee, I had the honor to inaugurate the session and be in the august company of dignitaries such as Padmashri Dr. Ashok Gulati, Smt. Rakhi Gupta Bhandaree, the Principal Secretary of the Food Processing Ministry, Government of Punjab, Shri Abhishek Dev, Shri Prasad P and several other members who came together to make the rainy Delhi afternoon meaningful with discussions around the ‘Future Of Food In India’.
The opening panel discussion got me hooked on to the speech by Dr. Ashok Gulati, who took us through the journey of India around food. From once being dependent on grain imports to curb starvation, in his words “ship to mouth” situation to now on its way to becoming a global food basket, resonated so deeply. He recalled that in the 1960’s, soon as the ships containing grains and food supplies would dock at Indian ports, the food would be directly sent to consumers, and if they failed to reach, the country would fall into a mass hunger situation. This was genesis of the need for ‘Green Revolution’.
We have indeed come a long way since then. Today, we take pride in running the world's largest free food program (over 800 mn beneficiaries) and yet we are net positive on food exports. However, there remains significant room for growth. India’s productivity of various food categories when compared to other countries stands much lower. Only 10% of our food is processed, compared to 80% in the U.S. This presents a huge opportunity for the country to improve food safety and nutrition, and simultaneously reduce food waste.
The session concluded with a closing speech by Shri G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, to whom I had the privilege of handing over a report ‘Making India The Global Food Hub’, released by AMCHAM India and YES BANK. It is a good report for anyone invested in the future of food in our country.
The panel discussion on sustainability left me feeling very positive. Ideas such as regenerative agriculture, direct seeded rice, nano fertilisers and seamlessly linking FPO’s to manufacturers, can indeed take us forward in a big way. If we come together to execute some of them at a large scale, there is a very bright yet sustainable future for food industry in India.
