Happy to share that my letter to the editor on the future of Canada was published in the Financial Times last week.
"When Tej Parikh asks why isn’t Canada an economic giant, he is partly correct (Opinion, September 4). Productivity in Canada has dropped, and may be linked to the high cost of Canadian labour and cheaper imports from the US.
At the same time, I believe a lack of vision and ambition on the part of Canadian policymakers is also partly to blame, especially around the need to diversify the economy away from merely extracting raw materials and selling them to the US — a strategy that has served us well thus far in making us wealthy, but which may be as debilitating as it is comforting.
Simply put, we’ve become comfortable being a client state and branch plant economy of the US, and so haven’t emphasised research and innovation, diversified trade relations and the development of new industries. To be fair, the Trudeau government has tried to address these problems by encouraging skilled immigration, investing in research and by pursuing new trading relationships in Asia.
Canada’s best bet would be to continue to focus on resource extraction for now, but to move further north and develop an Arctic specialisation that will make us more attractive in the coming years, while continuing to invest in research and technology, attracting skilled talent, and developing infrastructure and connectivity to enable more of Canada to be settled, regardless of the political backlash. Increasing the population size and distribution is both strategic and defensive, especially as the US becomes more politically uncertain."

Excited to share that I was interviewed for an India-based business podcast last week, for their latest episode released this week. "Cost to Company" is a weekly podcast by The Ken, a pan-Asian digital news outlet about work and workplaces.
Sneha and I talk about upskilling through side hustles, why it's more important than ever, why businesses are hesitant to upskill their own employees, and how employees are using side projects to develop new skills for the workplace that enrich their career growth. I think I show up just after the 10-minute mark.
Shout-out to Sneha Vakharia and the team at The Ken for starting a very timely and compelling podcast series.
