Sudden blurry vision in pregnancy is sometimes the first sign of preeclampsia. But for most women, it is something else entirely.
Pregnancy temporarily changes the shape of your eyes. The hormonal shifts cause fluid retention in your cornea, which changes how light bends through it. Your contact lenses can suddenly feel uncomfortable. Your glasses prescription can shift. Up to 40% of pregnant women develop dry eye too. This is why most eye doctors will tell you to wait until several weeks postpartum before updating your prescription. Everything tends to settle by then.
If your vision is shifting slowly during pregnancy, you are not imagining it. If it changes suddenly along with a bad headache, swelling, or visual spots, get checked immediately. Those are signs of preeclampsia, and they cannot wait.
This is what a healthy cycle looks like on a BBT chart.
The black line is your basal body temperature, taken every morning before you get out of bed. The pattern you want to see is biphasic: lower temperatures during the first half of your cycle, a clear shift up after ovulation, and sustained elevation for at least 12 days before your period.
On this chart, ovulation happened on day 17. The temperature jumped the next morning and stayed elevated for 14 days. The temperature rises 1 to 2 days after ovulation as your progesterone climbs. You need 3 consecutive elevated days to confirm that ovulation actually happened.
The CM row at the bottom is cervical mucus. Notice how it shifts from sticky to creamy to watery to egg white (E) right before ovulation. That is your fertile window. Egg white quality mucus means estrogen is peaking and you are most fertile.
What to look for in your own chart:
- A clear temperature shift of at least 0.4°F after ovulation
- Sustained elevated temperatures 12+ days
- Egg white mucus (clear, stretchy, slippery) before ovulation
- Temperature dropping right before your period starts
If your chart is flat with no shift, you may not be ovulating. If your luteal phase is short (under 10 days), your progesterone is likely low. If you never see egg white mucus, your estrogen may be too low.
The data is free. You just have to track it.
