So what happens if you get a room full if investors in the room and allow them to roast one another?
Surprisingly, they end up playing nice and roast themselves.
At our "Press Play Ventures - Pathways to Capital," we had the pleasure of hearing from seven distinct funding sources. Here's a summary:
Grants, Bevan McLeod BlueRock , Available at any business stage. They require significant effort & come with high scrutiny but they offer equity-free funding, making them ideal for research or validation stages that are typically hard to finance.
Accelerators, Akhil Sharma Antler Beneficial in the early stages. The downside is relinquishing a large portion of equity early on. However, they offer entrepreneurial wisdom, networking opportunities for co-founders, and long-term investment partners.
Venture Studio, Geo George Mayfly Ventures
For businesses with validation. The catch is that it’s like adding another pilot to your team. The advantage is gaining partners as invested as you are, capable of filling crucial roles without the pressure to skyrocket immediately.
Crowdfunding, Matt Vitale Birchal , is flexible in terms of business stages but is most effective post-product market fit. It subjects you to public scrutiny and demands a compelling narrative but enables the acquisition of a large investor and customer base quickly and efficiently.
Debt Financing Aprill Enright-Allen Tractor Ventures, Post-PMF & product development. It’s not ideal for businesses in need of early support or those seeking venture-level funds. The benefit lies in the cost-effectiveness of borrowing compared to relinquishing a significant portion of your business, providing both support and finance not typically available through traditional banks.
Angel Investment, Paul Baron Melbourne Angels Inc, For early stages. It may require time to secure substantial funds but offers strategic capital equipped with expertise and networks.
Venture Capital, Mei Lee Artesian (Alternative Investments) For early to late stages. The drawbacks include the pressures of scaling up, external control, and loss of ownership. On the upside, it provides access to significant capital, credibility, and a long-term partnership.
General comments about raising capital:
- The most valuable capital often comes from your customers.
- Seek funding when it's absolutely necessary.
- Start building relationships with potential investors 6 to 18 months in advance.
- Thoroughly research to identify the funding path that aligns with your business model and objectives.
- Always understand the terms and conditions of any funding agreement, recognizing that each capital provider has its unique approach. Fortunately, they tend to work harmoniously together.
Last but not the least thanks to our insightful speakers, Artesian (Alternative Investments) , and LaunchVic for making Press Play a reality!
