I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as VP of Engineering at Clear Street!
I've always gravitated to organizations and teams that are solving real problems, striving every day to move the industry forward in a small (or a big!) way. Clear Street certainly fits the bill - they are reimplementing the foundational components of finance in a modern way.
Anyone that has worked with middle-/back-office systems knows how archaic those systems can get - often a patchwork of disparate systems and slow, glitchy interfaces. Clear Street has been working on an API-first, cohesive implementation of business processes such as clearing/settlement/custody, securities financing, risk management, and even trade execution. They've then used these components to construct a tech-forward prime brokerage experience. And that's just the start - these building blocks can be composed together in different ways to support a whole host of other products, businesses, and use cases. Every startup seems to say this these days, but this really is the "platform approach" to technology.
I'm so excited to be joining Clear Street at this inflection point in their growth journey! I've met with several team members by now, and I am thoroughly impressed by how capable and strategic everyone is and how ambitious and aggressive their goals are.

Security masters are hard. In most equity trading organizations, there is typically a dedicated person or team, whose thankless job it is to compile a working security master for the trading system. If you are that person, no one ever commends you for getting it right day in and day out, but one day you get a single security attribute wrong, and suddenly there are people at your desk demanding root cause analysis and post-mortems. What you would like to tell them is: “Meh, there is no such thing as a security master — this list is based on vendor data and compiled based on heuristics. Today, the upstream data was just wrong or violated some of our assumptions. There are no real action items here other than pointing it out to the vendor.”
