Earlier this month, The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) had the honor of hosting our inaugural International Women’s Day Forum and Reception with over 170 women leaders from across industries in attendance. Being in a room filled with AAPI women was a meaningful reminder of how important it is to create spaces where we can discuss the unique issues we as AAPI women face.

For instance - according to the McKinsey Women in the Workplace Report:

  • Only 1 in 4 C-suite executives is a woman and only 1 in 50 is an AAPI woman. Even when high performing, AAPI women are less likely than other groups of women to receive positive feedback on our leadership abilities.
  • AAPI women have fewer informal interactions with senior leaders and are less likely to be seen and noticed as individuals. And while AAPI women navigate these struggles, an even greater number of Latina, Indigenous, and Black women experience them.

And while we celebrate the historic achievement of Michelle Yeoh’s Best Actress Oscar victory, the the anniversary of the Atlanta shootings is a sobering reminder that the violence against the AAPI community persists.

On behalf of TAAF, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the amazing women who joined us: Sheila Lirio Marcelo, Akila Raman-Vaseghi, Naomi Tacuyan Underwood, Yasmin Vossoughian, Annie Young-Scrivner, Erika Moritsugu, and Sandra Park. Thank you to Saks Fifth Avenue for hosting and committing a portion of their sales this month to AAPI women and girls.

I am personally grateful to all of my mentors and to the women who support me every day - you know who you are! Happy Women’s History Month!

A HUGE perk of being at the The Asian American Foundation is meeting incredible AAPI leaders. Hans Tung is on my list of favorites.
