Don’t Be Evil! – Google

For some reason, Google ditched its motto in 2018 but I digress. Warren Buffett gave us this timeless principle on working with the right people.

“Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three things: integrity, intelligence and energy. If they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.”

Charlie Munger told us this about the way the world works as if the above weren’t enough. “Do business only with people you can trust, even without contracts. This combination allows you to overcome complicated problems and achieve great results.”

In business, the greatest compliment one can get is not “I like you” but “I trust you”.

Despite knowing the above, one sees the evidence to contrary one after another. So much so, that businesses who are trying to do things the right way are in minority. No wonder a study showed that almost all the returns from stocks over a century long period are produced by just 4% of the publicly listed businesses. Mind you we are talking about public companies which have already overcome significant odds (1 in 100k to a million) to become large and profitable enough to become public listed companies.

In my view, the reason comes down to long vs. short term thinking and lack of deferred gratification gene exacerbated by the pressure to deliver near term results like EPS growth or returns to investors/Limited Partners.

“If you're not a little confused about what's going on, you don't understand it.” – Charlie Munger, Jack Welch, Edward Murrow

AI Confusion (Hype or Reality) – Reams of paper (digital and physical) has been spent and AI has been touted as the next big platform but is it? Doubts are beginning to emerge as everyone has been waiting for AI to upend their life ever since November 2022 but it hasn’t happened…yet! Given the range of outcomes touted for, it deserves everyone’s attention.

On the other hand, as with all technological advances, there’s a time element as well where even world changing technologies can fall flat in the beginning as other parts of the ecosystem esp. infrastructure is not ready. Think internet/e-commerce/quick delivery 1.0 in late 90s which led to the dot com burst but is thriving today everywhere. Similarly, AI has been around in academic circles since early 90s and bots have been around for atleast a decade or more so much so that there was a new wave in bots post 2016 coinciding with ZIRP regime.
