Quinton Huang

Junior Research Scholar – Engaging Asia at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada

Quinton Huang is a graduate student and researcher with a focus on Asia-Pacific relations and history. He served as a Junior Research Scholar (Engaging Asia) at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada from September 2020 to September 2022.1 In this role, he supported research on Canada-Asia subnational relations, co-authored reports on regional COVID-19 responses, and worked on Canada-Asia municipal twinning relationships.1

Currently, Huang is pursuing an MA in History at the University of British Columbia (UBC).2 He holds several positions at UBC, including:

  • Institute of Asia Research Fellow in the Centre for Southeast Asian Research
  • Student Associate of the Hong Kong Studies Initiative
  • Graduate Fellow and Associate at the UBC Centre for Migration Studies1

Huang's research interests include:

  • Social history of 20th-century Hong Kong, focusing on squatter settlements and refugee communities
  • Histories of colonialism, migration, and transnational communities in East and Southeast Asia
  • Non-state diplomacies and transnational civil society between Canada and the Asia-Pacific2

Outside of academia, Huang is involved with Strait Talk, an international civil society peacebuilding movement, where he serves as a board member and facilitator.12
