As we approach Deaf Awareness Month, it's time to ensure our online content is accessible for everyone.

Since we’re on LinkedIn, I’ll say it: if your content isn’t captioned, you’re missing out on so much potential revenue.

Captions aren’t just about accessibility; it’s a smart business decision. They also increase engagement, improve SEO, and expand your audience.

It’s not just Deaf and hard of hearing people. It’s new mothers nursing their babies at 3am, watching videos so they don’t fall asleep. It’s people at the gym or on the train. It’s employees secretly catching up on content during a boring meeting. It’s students in the library trying to absorb more information without disrupting others.

Don’t let your message get lost—caption your videos!

Transcript: (no captions) “Did you know that… Huh? Wait a min… (knocks on phone) (captions appear) Oh! That’s right. I was the one that stopped working. Deaf creators put a lot of work into making our content accessible. Not only that, but did you know that 85% of viewers watch videos on silent? If your video doesn’t have captions… scroll!”

My experience as a Deaf content creator is a fascinating one, and the latest thought is: You’re welcome to watch me to learn ASL, and i’m happy to share… at my own pace. 😊 I love sharing knowledge, and ASL is naturally one of the topics I love sharing about if you have questions.

As for my signing style… yes, I am very fast! it’s my Mid-Atlantic dialect.

Transcript: “If you’re hearing and interested in ASL, this message is for you. As a Deaf content creator, I often receive comments that include asking me to slow down, that I’m too fast for them, or telling me that if I delivered my signs in a more clear way, they would become a follower. First of all, I’m absolutely thrilled you’re here and eager to learn ASL. You are more than welcome to watch me and pick up on my signing style, and I’m happy to answer any questions you have. But I’m not going to slow down. I’m not an ASL teacher. I'm not here to teach a language, I'm here to share what matters to me using my native language, ASL. If you came across someone’s page who speaks only Spanish, would you ask them to slow down so you could learn? Probably not, unless you were sure that they were teaching the language. In my world, ASL moves at the speed of me. You’re welcome to watch!”
