For the past 2.5 years I have had the pleasure of serving on my town’s zoning board of adjustment. At least twice a month, and many months more than that, I have met with my fellow board members as we review departures from the zoning requirements. I moved from Alternate 2 up to a full board member during this time and was able to vote on many variances that will impact Morristown for years to come.
Last night was a bitter sweet meeting for me as it was my last on the Morristown Zoning Board of Adjustment. I recently purchased a home with my husband in the next town over and with my residency changing, I will be unable to serve on the Morristown ZBA any longer.
I wanted to share my 3 top learnings from sitting on the Morristown Zoning Board of Adjustment that I think can be applied to all:
- Your background does not matter if you are committed to learning - Lawyers, architects, engineers and planners are the regular witnesses on our cases before the board. My professional background is not in any of those areas. I attended multiple seminars, read 400 page land use ordinances, visited sites, and asked numerous questions to learn more and make qualified and educated decisions.
- Do not forget to give back to your community and volunteer - This volunteer role required at least 8 hours every month at the meetings, with many many hours in between meetings reviewing plans and briefs. Give back to your community and find a way to volunteer. You do not need to join a board, but learn more how you can get involved with your local community.
- Be the change you want to see - Do not just complain about things going on in your community without doing anything. Get engaged and attend a town meeting or join a board and be the change you want to see in your community.
Thank you to the Morristown Town Council for nominating me and thank you to the Town of Morristown (Morristown New Jersey) for supporting me on this board. Most importantly, I want to thank my fellow board members: thank you for guiding me, for being open to new ideas and perspectives and for continuing to support me even as I move away.
