I thoroughly enjoyed participating in Orrick's Inaugural Reproductive and Women's Health event last week. Such an honor to discuss a broad array of important topics with Tara Bishop MD, MPH, Robin Berzin MD Joanna Peña-Bickley Stephen Thau Nicholas Vetri Athena Shea Thora Johnson Liz Powell Elizabeth Comen, MD Sally Wolf Alison Greenberg Piraye Beim Maya Hardigan Anne Morrissey Neil Ray Marissa Fayer. The unmet needs in women's health must stay front and center... we need to continue the "movement" that is taking place for more funding of research and innovation, and to close the gap on investment in this critical and underfunded area of healthcare. The Catalytic Impact Foundation team is committed to furthering our investments in women's health innovation, and working with this growing community to address the unmet medical needs that affect the health, productivity and quality of life of all women.
What an inspirational day! I was delighted to be included in such an impressive group, including women’s health researchers, advocates, investors, and founders, as we gathered to support Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) in their launch of the ARPH-H Sprint for Women’s Health.
It was exciting to have Dr Jill Biden attend to announce ARPA-H’s commitment of $100 million dollars for “life-changing” research and development of technologies to address the critical unmet needs in #womenshealth today. It is time that healthcare in the US prioritized women’s health research and innovation. As Dr Biden expressed, we need a health system where “women aren’t just an afterthought, but a first thought.”
What if there were more effective treatments available for autoimmune disease, where women make up nearly 80% of the patient population? What if the US could address our having the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world? What if we address the reasons women are almost 3 times as likely to die in the 30 days following a heart attack? These health outcome disparities, and many more, are why the The White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, supported by the ARPA-H Sprint for Women’s Health, is so important.
Dr Biden was also joined by other notable leaders in women’s health, including Massachusetts Senators Warren and Senator Edward Markey, Maria Shriver, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Becerra, and ARPA-H Inaugural Director Renee Wegrzyn.
