Ice clouds are warming and they contribute to a surprisingly large proportion (~35%) of aviation's climate impact - who knew?!

These ice clouds, also known as contrails, are the innocent-looking, wispy white lines you sometimes see behind airplanes. They are estimated to be responsible for upward of 1% of all human-caused global warming.

Google AI, in partnership with American Airlines and Breakthrough Energy, brought together huge amounts of data (satellite imagery, weather and flight path data) and trained machine learning models to predict what regions & altitudes have conditions that will create contrails, then we had pilots perform very modest flight route changes (e.g. ascend or descend a little bit) to avoid making contrails.

Last week, we announced the results, verified via satellite imagery, of our trial showing that we can accurately predict contrails, and reduce their formation by 54% with initial estimates pointing to costs of $5-$25/ton CO2e. The nice thing about this is that, unlike many other things we could do to combat global warming, contrail avoidance can be done relatively cheaply, the rollout of this can be done relatively quickly and have a large impact worldwide

Very proud and humbled to be part of a small but mighty team that started this journey back in 2020. We still have more research to do and more partnerships to create. Onward and upwards - I'm looking forward to scaling this across the entire industry!
