Help Team-X AI get to SXSW by up voting our panel topic!
A decade in the making, Team-X builds on breakthrough insights about humans @ work, and helps teams decode their unique chemistry to drive performance - for cognitively diverse teams (i.e. every #team), #crossfunctional and #distributed teams (which is already how most #knowledgework gets done), and soon, #hybrid human-AI teams (as #ai agent co-workers become more common).
Help us get to Austin and share the new formula for high performing teams - please vote for the Team-X panel today (or by Sun 8/18)
You’re not bad or good, or one dimensional. You’re just human. Part 5
When Ultranauts Inc was founded in 2013, we set out to demonstrate that #neurodiversity could be an advantage in business. Our theory of change was simple. First Prove It (Phase I). Then, Share it (Phase II).
We spent a decade on Phase I of our mission (Prove It), and by 2022, we were tripling revenues every three years. We had won the business of industry leaders by outperforming larger firms, and demonstrated the business impact of cognitively diverse teams through our specialized services in #QualityEngineering and #DataGovernance services. We had done so with fully #distributed and truly neurodiverse organization with teammates in 30 states across the U.S., 75% of whom were neurodivergent.
As we embark on Phase II of our mission (Share It), we’re leveraging a decade of learning and experimentation on building high performing, distributed, cognitively diverse teams. The most valuable lesson we learned was about creating a workplace where #everyone can thrive.
Lesson #0: A workplace that fails some of us, will eventually fail all of us
(see comments for links to previous posts containing Lessons #1 and #2).
A typical Agile project team at Ultranauts would have teammates who are sensory avoiding and need blocks of protected time for deep work, along with teammates who are sensory seeking and need bursts of interaction to power through their work. That team would likely have teammates who are extremely direct and for whom any kind of diplomatic couching of criticism would feel viscerally dishonest, collaborating with team mates with prior trauma for whom that kind of directness could be crushing. The majority of the team might have a disability, the technical lead might be non speaking, and their executive sponsor might have auditory challenges.
Because of the extreme needs of our teammates, we couldn’t celebrate check-the-box activities that raised awareness but changed nothing. Because of the incredible diversity of our organization, we couldn’t waste time on feel-good programs that prioritized one group’s needs over others and bred resentment.
We eventually realized that the Job-To-Be-Done was not about accommodating the needs of #Autistics or #Women or #Blacks or any other group, but about redesigning the workplace to make it better for all groups.
I’m so thrilled for this next phase of Ultranauts as we start leveraging the insights and tools that emerged in our Universal Workplace to help other #teams better understand their teammates' unique needs, remove the barriers to their collective #performance, and achieve their full potential!
