Highlights
There is a time in your career, and we all experience this, you start feeling that you not making progress and rather at times regressing . Is this happening with you as well ? Here is a sincere advise that I can give to folks based on my 24 years experiences in industry:
-
Identify what success really means to you : Skills, title, impact, salary or may be more family-time. Then set specific, achievable short-term and long-term career goals
-
Seek honest feedback : You are afraid to really listen and understand what others have to say about you . This is not taking you anywhere, you have to proactively ask managers and peers for constructive feedback. And then, identify your strengths to build on and weaknesses to improve
-Commit to continuous learning : Which aligns with your goals and areas of improvement above. Just don't learn to satisfy your cognitive brain - learn and demonstrate the results which will take you higher.
-
Take calculated risks : As I say, take a bullet to your chest at times, you will be a hero in the end. Raise your hand for challenging, high-visibility projects. Also, do explore new roles or teams that align with your goals . All of this take guts.
-
Don't be "कुएँ का मेंढक" - Expand your network : Attend industry events, join professional groups, engage online and build relationships across teams and specialties. This is where I see a lot of techies lacking - sitting at their seats and doing cutting edge work which satisfies their ego. Does not work as you grow up the ladder.
So, go out there - expose yourself, be the loud voice in the room and raise your hand for most challenging projects in your company. You will eventually be a winner and break the barriers. For young people - Stay resilient, adaptable, and growth-oriented - your 20s are just the beginning.
