Inverter insights: Repowering older solar projects

Repowering older solar projects often involves replacing inverters, as the technology behind inverters and other balance of system components may become outdated more quickly than solar panels. Igor Mogilevski, product and solutions director for Solis, explains that repowering is necessary to address the aging of solar sites developed with central inverters about a decade ago. Central inverters can be replaced with newer models that offer higher power capacity and voltage ratings, such as 1,500-V compared to the older 600-V models. However, alternatives like string inverters may also be considered, although they require rewiring mainly on the AC side, which can lead to additional labor costs and physical site limitations.

When considering the advantages of string inverters over central inverters in a repowering situation, one important factor is the availability of more string inverters and their components on the market. This makes string inverters easier to repair and maintain compared to central inverters, which may no longer have spare parts or repair services available. Additionally, string inverters offer flexibility in terms of voltage and configurations, making them suitable for a wide range of applications and sites. This flexibility can be beneficial for owners looking to upgrade their solar projects.

On the other hand, swapping central inverters in a repowering situation also has its advantages. New central inverters often come with higher power capacity and voltage ratings, which can improve the overall performance of the solar project. In some cases, only a portion of the site may be underperforming, prompting owners to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of repowering. Ultimately, the selection of inverters should be based on power and AC voltage requirements, as well as the specific needs and limitations of the solar project. Labor costs are often a significant factor in the decision-making process, as repowering can be a substantial operational expense for owners.
