When we launched IBM Storage Defender, our vision was to break down the silos between teams, point products, and time-consuming processes to help customers fight Cyber threats. To accomplish our ambitious vision, we needed a few things to come together:
- Threat detection that leverages sensors across primary and secondary workloads. Detection that alerts in real-time, has high fidelity, and takes the least footprint.
- Inspect and take stock of all available copies of data, whether in the cloud, on hardware snapshots, or in backups to ensure recovery of a minimum viable enterprise from the least infected copy.
- Automate recovery of data within existing workflows, SecOps playbooks, incident response, and remediation procedures. Today we announced the next critical step towards our vision, by bringing state-of-the-art innovation for real-time threat detection in collaboration with IBM Research and IBM Security. Our Flash Core modules can detect data corruption in near real-time, but data corruption by itself does not necessarily signify a cyber threat. So, we go deeper with IBM Storage Defender sensors that look at the file system to detect abnormal access patterns. We further complement it with detection based on backup metadata, deeper app-aware scanning for data integrity, and signals from security tools such as intrusion prevention systems, XDRs, and SIEMs. Each sensor and its corresponding inferencing engine leverages AI across the stack to improve detection accuracy and build wisdom and signal strength to improve fidelity, remove false positives, and ascertain an attack. Once you detect a threat, you recover from the safest available copies. That requires testing pre/post copy and orchestration across all copies wherever they are held. An effective physical security solution, such as home monitoring systems from SimpliSafe or ADT need to ascertain an attack by corroborating evidence from sensors that trigger based on motion, shatter, smoke, or sound. Detection of threats to data is no different. It takes sharing intelligence across sensors whether from IBM Storage hardware, software, or from partners, like Index Engines and Cohesity. Cyber attacks are a given. What defines a resilient company is how it recovers data with speed, scale, and precision. IBM Storage Defender working with IBM FlashSystem Flash Core Modules provides end-to-end resiliency by breaking silos, working across primary and secondary workloads to help customers recover their data from cyber threats.
