While these insights aren't new, what’s often overlooked in structured methodologies is the human element of delivering change and technology—the anxieties and challenges faced by project managers and even founders building a product.
Why Do We Shy Away from Planning?
Planning is crucial for any project, yet many, including professional project managers, often avoid it. Here’s why and how to overcome this reluctance.
- Misconception: Everything Must Be Figured Out Before I Can Plan Many project managers and founders believe they need to have every detail sorted before starting to plan. This is not true. Projects inherently involve unknowns and uncertainties, which is why they need leaders. Accepting ambiguity and using tools like Risks, Issues, Dependencies, and Assumptions (RIDA) logs can help manage these uncertainties.
Startup founders often feel crippled by the need to have everything figured out. It’s essential to start by listing tasks and noting uncertainties as assumptions. This approach helps maintain momentum without needing all the answers upfront.
- Misconception: Planning is a Solo Task Another common misconception is that the project manager should create the plan alone. Effective planning is a team effort. The project manager’s role is to facilitate planning, gather input, and ensure the team owns their tasks and deadlines.
