Randy Ambrosie, born on March 16, 1963, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the 14th and current commissioner of the Canadian Football League (CFL), a position he has held since July 5, 2017. Before becoming commissioner, Ambrosie had a notable career as a professional football player, primarily as an offensive lineman. He was drafted second overall by the Calgary Stampeders in the 1985 CFL Draft and played for the Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts, and Edmonton Eskimos over nine seasons, culminating in a Grey Cup championship with Edmonton in 1993.258
Education and Early Career:
Ambrosie attended the University of Manitoba, where he excelled in football and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. His academic pursuits continued at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University and the Wharton School of Business.45 After his playing career, he transitioned into business and finance, holding leadership roles in several well-known securities firms before returning to football administration.46
Tenure as Commissioner:
During his tenure as commissioner, Ambrosie has faced various challenges, including navigating the CFL through the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been credited with improving league stability by securing new ownership in major markets and enhancing attendance and television ratings.128 However, his efforts to significantly increase league revenues have been met with mixed results; he acknowledged that franchise valuations remained flat during his time in office.17 Ambrosie's initiatives included expanding the league's digital presence and broadcast reach across North America.38
On October 26, 2024, Ambrosie announced his intention to retire in 2025 once a successor is appointed. He expressed pride in leaving the league stronger than when he began his tenure and emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for his successor.29
