Highlights
We do not understand the economic impacts of nature loss; we are not even close...
Do you think climate risk is big? Nature risk is much more likely and immediate between now and 2030: food supply disruptions, soil degradation, zoonotic diseases (hello H5N1!), and antimicrobial resistance are just some of the risks emerging from nature.
Banque de France has found that existing ways to model the economic consequences of nature loss have significant drawbacks, calling for further integration of ecological science and existing policies into any scenarios.
It found that Integrated Assessment Models (IAM) are typically skewed towards ecosystem services that ‘provide’ the economy, such as food or water, but often miss services such as flood protection, disease control, or soil quality, which help ‘maintain’ the economy.
This is an essential and undervalued topic. We are flying blind, and the consequences for our financial systems could be severe (12% loss to UK's GDP by 2030; this is bigger than COVID!)
We need to better integrate nature into risk science and insurance (AXA Climate Swiss Re Zurich Insurance SCOR) and align emerging ecological science with environmental macroeconomic developments. More attention and funding need to go to modeling nature risk!
